Kiyosumi Sugawara (Folk art Itaya Kobo)
All hand-crafted “Itaya” is a historic town with many Itaya-crafted samurai residences that have been used in the life of traditional crafts that have been around for over 200 years in kakunodate.
It is itaya work to be transmitted to the Yunnan district in the town for more than 200 years. It is presumed that the farming and the daily goods which used the Iyatakaede instead of the bamboo on its own have developed in Kakunodate in which there was no native bamboo before though “bamboo” has spread widely in various places in the country. One of the samurai houses visited by many tourists, “Matsumoto family” in the main house, “Itaya” is a demonstration sale of “The work” of the family. There are a lot of itaya work lined up in the eaves, such as baskets and colander. You can also take a closer look at the superb hand-acer mono trees of rip and weaving.
The Itaya work, which Acer mono trees in a splendid hand, begins to tear the trunk of the Acer mono trees which has been taken from the mountain to the strip.Next, it is cut into a thin plate less than one millimeter, and processed into a flexible material.”The belt of the Itaya which becomes a material does not have the rule of how many centimeters width.Roughly this width… It is made by the by-the-thumb.Thanks to his long experience and intuition, Mr. Sugawara speaks with a smile.I will knit the obi of the completed Itaya in accordance with the design which I envision. There is no blueprint for the product you are making, and you can rely on your intuition to move your hands at a surprisingly fast pace.Mr. Sugawara started Itaya at the age of 38.It was not early as a craftsman’s start, but because I had seen father’s work from a young age, I put it in the road of the Itaya smoothly. The new work of Itaya has been designed by a free conception obtained only because it experienced other works.
